The Film

20M: Where Sound Lives is an observational, sound-driven documentary tracing how hip-hop moved through Philadelphia during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Rather than explain that history through talking heads or continuous narration, the film stays with the places, objects, atmosphere, and work that made the sound possible. A microphone above a crowded room, fingers moving across a worn mixer, a cassette opened for repair, and a record turning on a platter become part of the historical record.

The camera is intentionally restrained. It watches long enough for a room to speak for itself. Voices enter later and remain off-screen, while archival materials appear sparingly as markers of the era rather than as the force driving the story.

The Edit Philosophy

Sound Leads. Picture Responds.

The structure follows sound changes rather than visual action. Shots are allowed to continue past comfort, silence is treated as active, and meaning is allowed to emerge rather than be explained.

The film is designed to leave the audience listening after the image is gone.

Current Status

Development & Pre-Production

The project is being developed as a standalone mid-length film, with room to grow into a larger body of work. Production decisions are being guided by a sound-first approach, controlled low-light photography, macro detail, and careful location recording.
